Anything can happen in America
This was the message from US President-elect Barack Obama, who was addressing a pre-inauguration celebration at Lincoln Memorial. He takes charge of the White House on Tuesday. He had an African name, Barack, or “blessed,” believing that in a tolerant America his name is no barrier to success.
US President-elect Barack Obama has been compared to Kennedy, a phenomenon and in some circles even a messiah. But as the US economy falls into a deeper recession, Obama is also being compared to former Democratic US President Franklin D Roosevelt. Also, the 2008 election is being compared to the election of 1932, that swept Franklin D Roosevelt into the Oval office.
During the Great Depression, Americans got inspiration and hope from President Roosevelt’s radio speeches or fireside chats.
Today, amidst the biggest financial crisis since the Great Depression, Americans have voted for a man who convinced them to have the audacity to hope.
Morevoer a Hindu woman priest will be among six religious leaders specially invited to participate in the National Prayer Service on January 21, a day after Barack Obama is sworn-in as the President of America.
Dr Uma Mysorekar, President of the Hindu Temple Society of North America will offer “responsive prayers” at the special service which will “symbolise America’s traditions of religious tolerance and freedom”, the Presidential Inaugural Committee said.
